I've right now got a website that is ranking #1 in Google. The problem? The content doesn't convert as much as I'd like. I have a modified version of the copy I'd like to replace it with. I've tried to keep the majority of the old copy, and merely expand on it. I know there are a lot of factors involved in this: but does anyone have any experience in doing this and the effects of it?

IF you replace your content with more high quality content then may be you will see little bit fluctuation in position but you will get #1 again.

I recently did this but I did not change the whole content. Removed some old content, edited remaining and added about 60% new content. My website was on 3rd, it dropped to 136 position after 3 days, danced around for 2 days then came back and is on 2nd position now :). Make sure the content is unique and high quality.

Thanks for your input guys. I figured there might be a fluctuation in terms of my rankings, but that if there was, it'd probably go back up to #1. The content quality is exceptionally high, and definitely the best article I've found on the subject.

When the content of a page is changed, the ranking, if any, stays for a while until the SE robots rescan the page and give a new ranking based on its existing parameters. If your new content is not good enough, then it will go low or disappear in G. If it's good or better, it will get the due ranking. It's not in your hands any more. :). But don't worry if the content is great.

And, if the earlier ranking was not making money for you, but was bringing in good traffic due to the #1 position, then add more helpful pages, either on the site or outside, to make the traffic more targeted.
