first of all: i´m a complete noob to blogging and wp, so hopefuly this is kind of useful information. oh... it´s my first post, too.^^

i use free wordpress-themes, and they are mostly restricting me from uploading certain pictures (i.e. header and/or etc.).
to change them anyways, i logged to the host via ftp and locates the pictures of the theme.
    for me it was "/html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/themename/images/picZ.jpg".
i downloaded picZ and looked up the properties (dpi and size).
then i opened my picture (picX) in paint and cropped it properly, so it matched picZ.
i saved it under the name of picZ and uploaded it to my host. i overwrote the original file in the process.
last thing to do was, to open the customize panel online and change the picture. i didn´t bother to change the thumpnail, though. so it was still original picZ, but the big header was my resized picX.

as there are many different picture formats in use, you might not be able to open/edit them without the proper software. if you are unsure what you need to do so, just google the format like ".xxx"

i just tried it out on a few themes. therefore i cannot guarantee, that this method will apply to all of them.

again, i hope this helps out a bit.
