I started a website, roughly 2 years ago, and have done pretty extensive backlinking campaigns. Now, 2 years later, I want to shift the focus of the website, and change some things around. Certain categories will be deleted. Certain posts will not serve a purpose, and so I'm wondering.. If I create an issue where all these backlinks are going to be pointing to removed sections of my site, I'd imagine my ranking would suffer.

So here's what I was thinking...

    1. Keep the old categories and posts in tact, but just not visible on the homepage (or other pages, for that matter).

    Or

    2. Just delete the content I no longer want.

    Ir

    3. Setup some type of redirect from the soon-to-be-nonworking pages, to perhaps the homepage.

Anyone have any ideas I should consider?

    Thanks

I think it would be best to redirect those pages to other inner pages on your site that have reasonably similar content if you have it somewhere on your site.

I was thinking this, but I honestly don't know how much of it will remain similar.

That solution seems like the smartest one to me. Solves the SEO problem and helps visitors actually navigate and stay on your site.
