Would changing the background image of a wordpress website affect the ranking?

It should not in my opinion unless image is heavy. I've done it on my web-site and it was fine. It might not be the best idea to use some huge photo as a background since it will affect the page load speed. The best approach here is to use a little image, something like 5x5px or 10x10px and use CSS to position it.

Also, HTTP-headers Expires and Cache-Control should become a good friends of an image. It is a good practice as well as Google's recommendation.
