Change my view:I don't think black hat is an easier alternative to white hat for big goals

Search engines have grown so complex that effective "black hat" methods take a lot of energy like white hat methods. This is what I see here.

I don't see that there is a difference, it's all grey hat unless you use spam hat.

SEO itself is blackhat unless it is social reach or brand building or on-page (keyword stuffing etc. are still blackhat or rather abandoned hat which do not work anymore). Read the Google guidelines once again if you are confused of what is allowed and what is not. Any link/backlink built to change the results of search engines is not allowed in simple words.

Very good point.

Regarding really dark black hat methods, they can be very useful (like jacking, for instance)--just don't get caught or all your efforts will be in vain.
