So lets say I had the site widgets.com and I wanted to rank in France.

So I purchased widgets.fr, created a load of backlinks to widgets.fr but had a 301 redirect to the widgets.com site.

Do you think it would help the rankings in France?

I don't see why it wouldn't? I've had amazing success with 301 redirects so translating that to another TLD from a diff country *should* work the same way....?

Houseaz, so what is it you are doing? Building backlinks to a site thats 301 redirected to another? Anything more to it?

Right - this thread actually gave me a thought so I posted my whole process. Anyway I basically only do it with masking so that I could rank the property if I was lucky too. I literally blast the crap out of these 301 .info domains...

I'm thinking about doing some linkwheels around the 301 redirected site and see what results

So linkwheeling the 301? Which is then in turn linked to wherever you want? Interesting...I remember I did a xrumer blast wrong once with a misspelling of the domain (drinking + seo = bad results) I actually just registered the mispelling anyway and 301'd it to the money site. Let me know how that link wheel works out? It might be a lot of effort for a 301 tho...

I think it will boost your rankings for widgets.com in france but you will lose the strength of the .fr domain name, so it's better to stay with widgets.fr if possible.

Maybe you could leave the index.php with a 'this site has moved' + link + meta refresh in 5 seconds and 301 subpages. It looks more believable but maybe it's not an issue.
