I'm a relatively smart fella. I already pull well into 6 figures doing network systems engineering. I'm a shark, and motivated. I'm curious if I can make a lot more money in the above mentioned field if I get good at it. I've never done coding for a living, but have taken a ton of comp sci classes, years ago. I just fell into systems engineering, so never developed my code skills. Never bothered with web tech, or SEO.

I just want to work from home and for myself full-time. I do a lot of consulting today, but it involves a lot of travel and face to face meetings.

For those of you that are pros and pulling more than 6 figures easily, where did you get your chops? Did you work for big web companies, or were you just motivated entrepreneurial hackers?

    motivation.
I don't make 6 figures, but I can sure in the hell tell you that this is motivation.
We are all after something, whether it is providing for our families, or ourselves, or even just the enjoyment of being part of the IM game.
It all motivates us. Now Im sure that BassTrackerBoats has something to say, he seems like he makes at least 7 figures a year.

A small majority earn more than 6 figures "Easily".

And most of those guys are usually the "silent" or the "lurking" types ;)

I don't think there are many of us earning 6 figures on here that work for anyone and have a traditional job. Personally, I work for myself and always have done. I also have zero technical skills, so the fact you have some previous tech experience would definitely help.

Simple as that, right? I take it you don't earn 6 figures (or even close)?

As I suggest to every newcomer to IM (and especially someone with a 6-fig salary), do it part time until you built up a network and are making enough in your spare time to do it full time. It is NOT easy to make 6-figures to replace your existing job.

That being said, there are more things to life than being rich. If you are okay with half your salary for 2 hours of work per day then you might have a go and relax on a beach in Thailand somewhere ;)

While being a 'smart fella' and having technical skills help, the difference between having job that pays six figures and earning six figures or more doing IM/SEO is that one is a 'Job' where you get trained to do that 'Job' well. the other is a business and you need to be able to train yourself, make strategic decisions, think outside the box, manage your budget, holding your nerve with the Big G Panda and Penguin on your tail, putting together a process that automates most of your work and finally have the desire and determination to never give up until you succeed.

With determination comes success, White Hat is just an illusion that covers up the shady black underneath.

To get an edge on anything you need to cheat to some degree, breaking your back for chump change doesn't get anybody anywhere very fast.

If you wan't to go far you have to be prepared to take risks, this involves dealing with the dark arts and knowing the consequences.

I think SEO's peaked and will possibly decline due to Google's efforts (read: Penguin), so you're entering the market in a fairly saturated environment.

However, what you can make is entirely up to you, but you have to work hard. Offline is probably your best bet. I think networking is also important.

For example, take the moderators and guys in green, (I could be wrong) but they probably make a big chunk of their money from this forum. However think how long they've been here and how hard they had to work to get into a position of authority. The same applies in the real world.

There's a slight culture of "I earn $xxxxxxxxx" in IM, so take the people who say such things with a pinch of salt.

One thing that is a solid truth, if you can make a brilliant website you have the jump on most.

Bottom line is it's all about entreprenurial skills here. Everyone is technically self employed. It is business after all. Good luck.

Definitely don't quit your job until you're steadily making money. Not many people can handle coming home from work and then working part time on their business. It's a serious commitment.
