I'm currently struggling to come up with a topic I am truly passionate to start a website about. I thought this could be a good thread for people to give their advice and tips of how they overcame the problem.

I personally believe that creating a website just to make money is the wrong approach.. I think if you pick a subject that you are truly passionate about, you will be able to create much better content that is natural and shows the intent of good will. In other words, less intimidating and sales-based.

The problem is the subject. Anyone can do keyword research and come up with a "niche", which basically leads to people giving up on their websites from lack of interest. Identifying a subject that interests you first, then doing market research into that subject seems like the best approach.

Any advice, tools, or methods you guys who are successful have used to get over this hump?

Make a buzz feed-like blog... google "list of things everyone hates" turn each one into a click bait post. Facebook sponsored story the posts to get traffic. Grow the ad spend on the ones that produce ROI with ads.

This is a great idea. Expanding on lists that already exist is a great way to come up with article ideas.

I know. Porn. It may not help you get over the hump though *no pun intended*

Well it may be hard but your passion is not always what "sells" but rather the latest and greatest keyword for a smaller market segment. So however hard it is you need to learn how to adapt.

I know of someone who wanted to become a gardener but his father forced him to become a chartered accountant because that is where the money is. Moral of the story: if you work in gardens for a living you will never have a garden of your own. On the other hand a CA makes lots of money and can have his very own, beautiful, garden.

Very true. Follow the money, then follow your passion. If the two coincide then you are one of the lucky ones.
