Can't seem to work out pay per click.

Hi guys I hope this post doesn't breach any rules. I am looking at getting in to pay per click affiliate marketing but I just can't seem to work how to start. I'm not asking for a quick money maker. I'm just wondering if any body has any pointers or a guide for me to read for the basics I have searched on line and found a couple I was just wondering you guys had and guides you would use many thanks Ross
