Really can't remember where but someone said that a static homepage is very bad for SERP
    Is this true?
Maybe because the crawler see that there arn't updates and it thinks the site is low quality?
Has anyone saw changes is serp because of that?

I've also heard this, I read you're supposed to update the page once a month.

Never had a problem and I rank for some tough keywords.
Latest post widget in sidebar gets your pages crawled just as much as having
    posts on home page.

Oxon is right. If you have any kind of widgets on the side that show latest posts, tweets etc., then your site isn't "static" per se.

Well, this is certainly not true... Almost 50 percent of the websites on the web are static. Not every website has the potential of updating content frequently, this does not mean such websites cannot rank high.
I have many static websites and few of them are ranking very good.
