What would you do in this situation?
you are sitting at a coffee shop, and your phone rings a few times throughout an hour.
A guy says "do you mind turning down the volume on your phone or putting it on vibrate?"

1) say "sure" and put phone on vibrate
2) say "this is not a library" and continue your thing

Personally I would put it on vibrate. I don't see it as that important to have the ringer on when the phone is at arms length from me on the table.

If it was at a baseball game or something like that I wouldn't turn it down/off. Coffee shops seem to be a place for people who are trying to either study or relax and if my phone interferes with that then I would feel impolite to continue bothering others.

Depends what the guy is doing. If he's just sitting there being a cheeky kunt then keep it on your ringtone. If he's trying to work then put it on vibrate. Theres nothing worse than if your coding and your in the middle of a thought and an external source distracts you. brb back to square 1

It is not a "must" to put it to vibrate.

But as you know, our society has pretty much became "self-entitled". They think the cafe belongs to them and "others" need to respect them.
But on the same time, it is courteous not to 'annoy' others. But don't get me wrong I'm not saying you're annoying or annoying others.

Just think for a moment, perhaps your ringtone might be nice to your ears but not to others?

For my case, I always put my phone on vibrate mode when I'm taking the public transport. As weird as it sounds, I just don't want people who had a long work day being woken up by my ringer.
Just let them sleep. I even do that in coffeeshops/cafes, because I know some people are there to study or chill out after a hard day. Just let em' have a peace of mind.

Interesting Fact: In Japan, it is a norm to turn your phone to silent mode when taking the train.

I agree with blackseng, that kind of shit annoys me. When I'm in the coffee shop reading, working, studying. I would appreciate it if people would SHUT THE HELL UP.

A coffee shop is a meeting place. anybody can make coffee at home. The primary purpose of a coffee shop is not for drinking coffee. its purpose is for people to meet and discuss shit. discussing = noise
whoever doesn't like that should go to the library.
I am not trying to be an ass, I also hate it when people are inconsiderate and won't shut the fuck up, but I never complain to them because that's what a coffee shop is for.

Hmm.. tough one really!

I hate it when somebodies phone rings all the time.. on the other hand you're in a public place drinking coffee so why give a damn.

Tell him to go die but turn it off anyway when he's not looking ;)

I guess it depends on which of you is behaving in an acceptable way considering the surroundings. If you're in an inner city coffee shop, dozens of people, noisy as hell, then I can't imagine that your ringtone is actually disturbing anyone - unless you're literally sitting there texting and being a little shit.

However, if it was the type of coffee shop with very quiet jazz music playing on the speakers, people almost whispering to each other, and sound foam on the walls to keep the echo down, then I'd suggest you're out of order.

My guess is that I would try to see what the man is doing. If I'm genuinely bothering him then yes, vibrate (either studying, reading, relaxing, napping whatever) . If he's acting like a mofo and he has company then, phone speaker music time :)

I wouldn't mind doing it if he was asking politely.

If it was a girl asking, I'd say something like "sure, after you put your numbers in here".

You heard it here first people. This is the penguin 2.1111 update :D

Agree To Disagree.

In general, I don't really mind people making noises with their mobile phones, reason being is they may be expecting urgent calls, just be considerate and answer swiftly. On the other hand, vibrations are good but if the person didn't pay much attention and after long hours, it may turn irritating.

Detrimental Situation,
