Assuming you wish to rank in google.ca...
ccTLD is a ranking factor for local search, so having a .ca domain will help.
Alternatively, if you're building something like a brand, you could use a .com and either host the site in Canada or set the location in Google Webmaster Tools.
Thanks for the information, will be using a host in the US, will have to figure out the location settings.
If you are targeting ONLY Canadians, then I would go with a .ca name and host it in Canada.
I think (but I am not sure) that the country where your site is located is more important than tld.
Separate names with a comma.
