have a gun? need to get somewhere relatively quickly? move to canada!

City Offers Bus Tickets For Guns!

The Halifax Regional Municipality is offering gun owners a deal: hand in your firearms and ammunition for... bus tickets!

Starting next week, residents can turn in a gun for 50 bus tickets as part of an amnesty program that is set to run from Sept. 12-23.

The program comes in response to increasing gun violence. Most recently, a man was fatally shot behind a Dartmouth elementary school.

Despite a unanimous vote Tuesday, many councilors mocked the approach to such a serious issue.

Coun. Gloria McCluskey described it as some "kind of a joke" to offer bus tickets.

She was among a number of critics who say bus tickets are not worth enough to make a difference in the lives of people involved with gun violence.

These types of gun grabbing methods are always hilarious to me because you are only punishing responsible gun owners. This is unnecessary propaganda made to guilt law abiding citizens

If there are going to be guns that exist no matter what. Reality. I would rather have them in the hands of people who at least follow the law and got their weapon legally.

This doesn't solve the gun issue one bit because criminals are never going to turn their guns in. And criminals will always be able to get guns.

It's stupid as fuck, public relations stunt meant to look like they're working on solving the crime epidemic.

Not trying to make this a debate but I think there's a reasonable point to be made:

    A) you can't always tell a responsible gun owner apart from an irresponsible gun owner.

    B) Everyone is following the law, until they don't. Law abiding citizen today, mass murderer tomorrow. As a gun owner myself, I'm not saying this largely happens (especially in Canada) but there's no force that prevents people from suddenly no longer being law abiding citizens.

    C) Even responsible gun owners make dumbass mistakes.

So if someone 3D prints guns for cheap, can they keep turning them in for 50 bus tickets and then turn around and sell the bus tickets and make a profit?

I don't see how this is stupidity. This isn't a mandatory turn-in. If you no longer want to own guns, or if you want to own less guns that's cool. No one reasonable would see an issue with that.

When people don't want to have guns anymore they toss them in rivers, sell them on the black market, or sell them to whoever will buy them. Here in the states, anyone can get a gun at a gun fair without any type of criminal background check (depending on your state).

What's the harm in the government helping those who no longer want to be gun owners? My local police station has a firearm deposit box you can go and they'll pay you $X for the weapon. Not sure on all the details of that program. I'd much rather people find a safe way to remove the gun than it end up in the river, on the street, in a bush, etc. Where it can end up in the hands of a child or a criminal.

Because the government is ripping people off, by giving them far below fair value, and then they turn around and destroy them, which screws over the taxpayers as well, since they don't resell them for a profit.

I guess in that respect it's quite a clever plan then because anyone with a legit gun would not avail but anyone with a black market gun (harder or at least more risky to sell) might take up the offer - and those guns that are traded in criminal underworld are probably the best ones to get off the streets.

Someone that will use their gun for violence will not turn it in.

These things are a joke, even if they get 2,000 guns im sure even more will be smuggled in by noon tomorrow.

Its a endless cycle that will never stop unless poverty is no more.

I don't know a criminal that did a crime they didn't have to commit.

The only people that are going to turn in their guns in this situation are people who have shitty old guns that are worth 20-25 bus tickets anyway that use public transport on regular basis. So not that many. :p

Still, I think Europe and Australia show pretty clearly that making guns more difficult to get decreases gun violence. Many illegal guns or guns used for illegal activity were legal guns at some point, so decreasing the number of legal ones makes the supply for illegal ones lower. So gun laws are not a bad thing in general. Unless you think gun violence is fun or something...

Knife homicides skyrocketed in Europe after the gun ban. What's next, ban muscles? Well a man got arrested in sweden for being too muscular...

Nothing good comes from being disarmed. Slaves are disarmed.

Europeans can't even defend their daughters from being used as sex slaves by... you guessed it, thugs who use illegal guns!

Guns have never been a problem in Canada. People use them for hunting mainly here, pistols are impossible to get I am pretty sure. Guns like AR-15's are on the "restricted" list meaning you need to be squeaky clean to get one. Most people here who don't like guns are just scared of loud noises.

Also, the recent gun violence is probably a fluke. More than likely because the East Coast here in Canada is a pretty garbage place to live. It's similar to Greenland. The mentality there is: another day, another bottle. Any true East Coasters go out west to work on the oil rigs, pursue business in major cities or any other kind of employment.

i find it funny that offering tickets is the best idea they could come up with. easier than getting to the cause of the problem.
