When it comes to tax and the paper work involved how do you write off certain things/services like YT views or FB likes, etc.? So for example, when I build a website and bring FB likes to it by purchasing a service from BHW, can I write the FB likes off as a business expense or am I better of taking this in as my own cost due to the nature of the service? After all anything that is written down as a business expense requires a receipt, in this case this could be a PayPal one, so not much can be said about what is being offered in the first place. Not really sure what to do about this though.

I wrote off all my SEO purchases for last year. What I do is have a paypal account that I only use for my IM stuff. When I send a payment I make sure to write in the message box what I'm paying for. Then on my taxes I think I just listed it under advertising.

You can write off ANY business expense. As long as you have proof, which is not an issue when you pay online.

I understand that all business expenses can be written off but how does it work when it comes to services such as YT Views, FB Likes, etc? Due to the nature of these services I can't exactly say "$XXX spent on YT Views". lol

Listing such things under advertising sounds like it could work though.

That is exactly where you would list them. I do taxes, so if you have any other questions you can also pm me.

Anything you pay for the has to do with your business you can write off. If you go out to dinner and talk about your business...travel expenses...just about everything :)
And yes, even facebook likes and youtube views

Thanks for the question. I'll need to pay tax as well, so this will definitely come in handy.

    BTW,
Like dgfalk said, you can list it under Advertising. Or even as SEO. A lot of companies pay over $1k/month for SEO, and they probably just write it off.

We'd spend 10k+ monthly on various seo services and of course we wrote it all off. The IRS will look at you funny if you're NOT reporting marketing expenses, so why wouldn't you?

However if you're paying an individual $600+ you may need 1099's. Hopefully if they're collecting payments that large they're already a business entity themselves and can make that step unnecessary.

1099s? I've zero idea about it. Let me google it up.
And I'm collecting payments over $1k, but I don't know jack about income tax. Expecting my dad to handle it all, he's a lawyer.

That's really cool to have a lawyer in your close family. :p

I'm from the UK so the 1099's or w/e it is doesn't apply to me. Though then again I have to pay/charge 20% tax or something like that. Will do some more research on that myself, I was just puzzled on what to do with SEO services but it seems to be easier then I thought it would be.

    Thanks everyone.

I'm not an accountant or lawyer so don't take my word for gold, just giving a heads up on that. For example, once one of my affiliates surpasses $600 in payouts for the year we're supposed to do a 1099. This is in USA.

Every last cent you spend on a business or through a business can be written off.

Buying views is not illegal, its helps boost the ranking. So You wouldn't have to worry about reporting it to the IRS.

I agree. You just need proof and you should have no problem.

It depends on where you live and the tax rules. In the USA, you can. As mentioned above, you just need proof, in case the IRS audits you. Just print off your receipts, there's your proof.

If you pay them using PayPal, I think you should be able to use the PayPal receipt as proof. I'm not too sure about other methods of payment though.

    Here ya go buddy:

    Expense sheet -
    Code:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?4h6ej5fofcu6ef9
Just go over this sheet and keep track of everything you spend regarding your self employed ventures or business. Also just put those services you mentioned under marketing and advertising expenses as a few have mentioned already.
