Can you use Google Analytics and Webmaster tools if you have a site that is full of duplicate content?

Say, if you block G from the robots.txt since G would downgrade/penalize the site seeing all the duplicate content, would we still be able to use G Analytics and Webmaster Tools for traffic stats purposes without having G penalizing the site?

Yeah but that monster sucks up a lot of resources as it's not good for sites that use a lot of resources already, at leats if using a shared account and not dedicated server.

if you are blocking google from seeing your site via robots.txt then how are you getting your traffic.

But to answer your question. your site has to be crawlable to use webmaster tools, you'll get an alert to edit your site so it is indexable.

as far as analytics goes you could probably get away with that
but im starting to use a service named woopra you should give it a try

I don't want traffic from G, its all direct traffic.

So it's possible to use Analytics without G being able to see the content is all duplicate content?

    Who cares?!

If you don't want Google traffic then what does it matter? Analytics will still track your traffic if it's botnet russian spam traffic....lol

I care as in my case I want reliable traffic stats. Google is not the only source of traffic available (as you all know) and it's quite possible to block Google traffic and make money. Google Analytics is a fairly reliable basic traffic stat provider and worth having to track traffic.

Can't say I've ever seen a case of Google crawling/penalising a site simply because your using GA and have duplicate site issues.

That said, what are you worried about if all your traffic is direct anyway?

GA will still work, it's not 100% accurate, but then what analytics package is these days. ;)

Can you explain what is wrong please?

I will rework the site in the future and create unique content so I dont want G to penalize my domain now because then my future efforts will be futile.

I'm still undecided. I have Bing webmaster tools but it's pathetic, crawls like one page per day lol

Ah I see why your worried now.

How "duplicate" is your duplicate content?

End of the day a no-follow/no-index should stop any issues really. That's what they're there for.

Just about all content is duplicate although I haven't stolen anything, the content is freely available and can be used by anyone, but its obviously already indexed in other sites.

So you suggest just adding a noindex tag at the header so all pages have the noindex tag? in all honesty im not even wanting Google to crawl my site because I fear it penalizes my site if I screw up anything or if it can still pair up my content to that of other sites and see it as duplicate.

I always thought noindex just meant don't display on SERP and that Google could still penalize you. Perhaps the big question would be, how do you guys with duplicated content go about with Google?

I want to use G Analytics because I need to track my visitors properly. Despite the site is full of duplicate content, it serves a good purpose and will be getting some good traffic.
