I used to rank for the hardest keywords with subdomains. However since the last google updates this doesn't seem to work anymore for me. Sometimes I can rank for small keywords, but not the hard ones.
Does it still work for you guys? Any tips?

The problem isn't just with sub domains, its become generally difficult to rank quick.

Of course it still works. Just look at stackexchange.com, wordpress.com and blogger.com.
I have no idea how subdomains ranks comparing to non-sub tho. Technically WWW is a subdomain as well.

Sub domains rank the same way normal domain does

For my ticket site i have 75+ wildcard sub-domains (each sub is a minisite for artist/band) and 70% rank top 5 for artist name right now.

So yes you can rank sub-domains.

It is still working but in fact it take much more time. In my case after standard work with backlinking I should wait a little of time. Generally it takes me about 1 month. Before 1 week.

Subdomain works, but only if your domain itself is highly authority

Not really sure of the context of your question OP, as it's a little ambiguous, however, Google said as recently as a few weeks ago that they treat subdomains and root domains as "essentially different domains"...

Subdomains on sites like wordpress and blogger, yes, they still rank, mostly with bulk PBN and GSA spam.
