    Quick question....

If I seo for a keyword like free doormats but before I rank I pay adwords for a spot with the same keyword until I can get ranked higher will this make it harder to rank???

You can rank for a keyword and use adwords for the same. It doesn't seem to be a problem.

Using adwords, while optimizing your website, is also a good way to find keywords that you can optimize for in the future. Be sure to track your adword keywords though, so you know which ones are converting to buyers.

Google shouldn't penalise you for using their advertising network. I would think if they tried this and got rumbled somehow they would be at risk of being sued by pretty much everyone of their customers.
