I was just wondering, if you have a high authority forum and you mak a large thread there, with pictures, videos, high quality article and do some comments! Then you build links with a keyword (it's also included in the thread) do you then think you can outrank a regular website that is selling the service you made a thread about?

I have been looking at this in Google, so far I can't find any example where I get a forum url up rather than a website selling a service searched for.

Example: I enter Web hosting in Google, I get the well know top 10 hosting companies up there, not a single link to for instan webhostingtalk.com or (if it exists) to another high authority forum.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Social signal it is! Also, consider it as a money site and build quality backlinks.

I've seen forum threads ranking higher than authority sites. for medium terms not for ultra competitive stuff like hosting.

Happens mostly then when the threads are viral (have lots of fresh relevant replies and are being added really fast).

You mean better to get lots of FB, Twitter, Instagram signals than for instant BL from NY Times, Daily Mirror or other similar high Auth. Websites ?

Okay... interesting... do you have seen them last for long or only for a short period. What is the number of "lots of fresh relevant replies" if you can elaborate?

i have seen threads on first page with highly competitive keyword..but on first position, i don't think so..
i guess it has to do with content in answers and ip addresses.

I've seen it happen but rarely. However I've seen it happen many times ranked high on the first page.

It's because no sensible person will build backlink to a site they have no control over.

Good point, but isn't it the same as when you build backlinks to a Web 2.0 or Wordpress.com blog, you never know when it will be deleted?

Bright idea, google "Can you rank a forum thread over a website in Google?" and find out.

    Seriously.
