A company I have just started working for in the marketing department unfortuantely has a contract with an SEO agency until June and they rang me today to give me an update and they told me that the site now has 13 links to it, while I was on the phone with them I checked the site in Majestic, Moz & SEMRush and it registered 0 links on all of them!

So I told them this and they said they would look into this and this is what I have now been emailed back:

"I have now looked a little closer at how it works with the links.

It appears that the links are not visible in MOZ or Majestic because of secrecy.
Therefore, I can unfortunately not show you these.

However, I have looked more closely into our system and it turns out that the total amount

of all the links to your site when summed up with sub links are 37."

Are they just full of shit?

How can you hide links from these tools? Is there a tool I can use to find out the links they are using?

Or are they just the worst SEO agency like I think they are?

You can hide these links with a number of methods.
    1. Blocking their spiders with .htaccess
    2. cloaking content so they can't see links.

The only reason you would want to do this is so people can't find them... I would guess they are doing Blackhat link building, or actually they have built no links.

You would not be able to do this unless they were your sites, and if they are using a PBN they will own the websites themself so it's highly unlikely that they will grant you access.

    Thanks

You work for the client right? but the links they have hidden will be on websites outside of your control... You won't have access to them (you can't even find them by the sound of things).

.htaccess controls who can do what on your website, take a look here if you want to learn about it.
