I just wanted to throw the idea. Most people can tell when they see a site, 98 times out of 100 the creator is trying to cash in on it by slamming you with incentives, banners, ads, pop ups, CPA lock, etc. Let's just say for example we are creating a site offering free giveaways or offers too good to be true.

Would a little donate button add to the legitimacy by giving a message off like "hey, I'm one of you, I'm broke but I am doing this out of my heart"

    or

would it just make you look like a greedy bastard?

Hum donate button works a little, for low traffic website it worked for me better than any ads

You just have to be smart about it and let them know that you feel sorry to ask but ask and let the amount free saying that you don't want people to be jailed of an amount.

Actually ppl give me more than i've expected because they feel ashamed to give you 1 buck :D

I would imagine you would more likely get donations if it was a really specific niche and you are contributing to the topic some how, like making new tutorials or doing research on the subject. And you could have a button that says something along the lines of "help me continue my research"

It surely makes Readers think you are not that rich.

BTW,as said by jeffpaul, you need to provide them something special like a software for free

For example, just take the guy who created a software called minixrumer and he is providing it for free.So he can place donate button om his site and people may largely consider donating him.
