I just learned this week. I mean, I drove stick before on a Camaro SS but wasn't very good at all. I decided to drive around for several hours and ended up learning on a V10 BMW M6. Pretty excited. It's a lot more entertaining than an automatic!

I prefer standard over automatic any day. My first vehicle was standard, so I had no choice but to learn :p

If you can't drive a manual then you can't drive. Automatic has its uses though. :)

    Standard all the way.
Auto cars are just about bearable, boring to drive. Auto HGV's are a nightmare to drive, truly awful...

Stick is better, automatic is boring and not good for driving fast. I think auto is for taxi drivers who need drive in city all day everyday.

I take it standard is what we call "manual" in the uk - ie you change the gears yourself?

I drive manual now, used to drive auto. I definitely prefer manual. It's more fun:)

There's no reason not to learn manual, once you learn how to drive manual gear cars, you train yourself to automate the process to minimize the mental stress when driving. If you obtain a license for driving an automatic, you won't be able to drive a manual and you'll have to go through the driving tests again.

I prefer manual but to all those saying that automatics are boring, well, you've probably never driven off road in a 4x4. :D

I drive a manual myself, love it so much. However, there are SOME RARE times that I wish that I could have an automatic car for about 10 minutes so that I can simply drive easier if I'm multi tasking things such as plugging my iPhone into my touch screen ( a pain in the ass, I need to build a mount for it to my dash ).

Learning manual is the best thing you can do. If you can drive manual, you can drive almost ANYTHING.

Automatic car takes me 5 minutes to master it.

Have you driven one of those in automatic off road? It can be great fun. Manual gives more control but my reply wasn't about that, it was about those peeps saying automatic is boring. It can be both, depends how you use the car. In those automatics you can still get gear shifting which somewhat gives you control. :D

To be honest, I'd never take an auto off road but that's just me being me. I like to dip clutch and be able to throw the back end around a bit and manual gives you the control that you need as you can keep blasting the power and control how much bite you get from the diff.
The only time I see auto being any use at all is in heavy stop-start traffic. That's just my opinion though, I just don't like it at all ;-)
