I already know how to download an entire website, I am planning to download a similar website in a different industry to the one I want to build, but one which still has the layout and basics of how I want my site to look.

I plan to make it unrecognizable. Change all images, layout, text, all buttons/ drop downs/ font/ colors/ content/ Folder names in cpanel/ file names where possible/ where images/ text divs are placed/ website name (obviously)/ anywhere their business name or website is mentioned/ terms and conditions.. everything. I plan to use my own choice of java etc.

I am learning how to build a website and think this would be the best way. I plan to take the newly created website and make money from it. I have an original business idea, all I am doing is using their site as a foundation to build mine. I have made sure it is a different industry to mine so there is no risk of me causing them any loss of business etc.

Is there any way, if I do everything I have mentioned above, that this is still deemed illegal?

If it is illegal I am more than happy to just look through the files and learn from how it is all laid out etc. but I am pretty confident in being able to do the above, I am not at the stage where I could build a site from scratch just yet. It is a slow learning process for me between full time work and full time online study.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks guys.

Food for thought: If you change everything, then why not make a new one?

First check the source code to see if that site is using any open source code snippets. If it does, then you can copy that part without having to worry about anything. In general, better try making your own site instead of being a copy cat.

I am learning how to build a website and think this would be the best way

    No, it is not

I have an original business idea

Copying a website? Doesnt show much originality

    If it is illegal

I think you already know it is not "legal", otherwise you would not come to ask here; if you are looking for some sort of approval, you are not gonna get it.
Now, knowing that it is not "legal", you also know that nobody will ever catch you, so here is where your moral and other shits will come into place and push you to take a final decision.

All in all, my suggestion would be to stop asking for advice and simply take action, if you fall, you will learn, if you succeed, you will earn...

It can be useful to look at the code and to see how other sites are put together BUT you should do this in-conjunction with learning HTML,CSS,PHP etc

If you just want to get started on your business, then just use Wordpress until you have sufficient knowledge.

and to add to my previous comment, if you need a starting point, then look into bootstrap. Bootstrap gives you responsive layouts without headaches. Search in google for "bootsrap start template" and take it from there. I am sure you will end up having a better site than your competitor ( given , you try making one).

    Hey Reyone,

I get what you are saying, but when I say I think it is the best way to learn, I mean for myself, going by my learning style and how I retain information effectively.

Copying a website? I'm not copying, I am using the same foundation and making it my own. Improving on it, hopefully. Maybe you didn't read my post correctly. I didn't write 'I am going to copy the entire website and upload it exactly the same'. I also mentioned it is in a completely different industry so your statement about not being original makes no sense at all.

Please read the post properly before replying. Thanks for taking the time to reply though, I do appreciate the effort.

Thanks :) I will definitely look into bootstrap, I tried looking for something like what you are talking about but to no avail. Sounds like this is the better option for me. Does it come with all of the files and everything? I am happy to create these and figure it out as I go but it would be cool if it came with it. Just checking out the site now.

You can't do that. If you do, the internet police will bust your door down. Might take them a day or a week, but eventually they'll be there to question you.

As a side note, while it is literally possible to sue anyone for anything in the US, there happens to be a loophole where you cannot sue someone if they take your web code and change it. Its the law.

Yupp it comes with all. Bootstrap is an open source project by the makers of twitter. It will save a lot of your time for sure. To change the default look, you can add a new css file to your page ( after you add the bootstrap) and style it as you like.

Ignore those saying how illegal this is. Obviously they need to go over to the big circle jerk WF. However if you do not change
it up you could get hit for duplicate content and if it is a well known website you might think about offshore hosting.

I remember somthing my grandad told me once which applies here. If you can work it out you have your answer....

If you have a ship and replace a damaged bolt, is it still the same ship? If you then replace a broken window is is it still the same ship? If over the course that you own it, you replace everything, is it still the same ship?

There's nothing anybody has ever created that is not based on someone else's work ,
    copyright is unnatural !
What you re planning to do is exactly what everybody does and how everybody learns .
We all started by copying and slowly adding few bits of our own ,slight improvements and so on,
So go ahead copy learn improve create :)
