if i see a site out there that has a theme/template i like, is there a way to copy it (and change the images to what i need obviously) and upload it to my wordpress site? i'm not talking about copying their content or graphics, just want the layout. i don't know anyhting about wordpress, just got my first wp blog up on a free host to play around before buying a host.

Hire a freelancer to do that, it's faster in most cases.

yes...it is easy, what you need are the css file, images files and the template name.

You can view their page source to trace the css file location, know what is their template name and directory, what plugins they use.

btw, you can't rip the template files as they are in php format but what you can do is to know which template is in use and find a nulled version and apply the css modifications (for template themes like Studiopress etc...). But if the template files are customized one, you gotta look for someone to replicate them.
