Of course it is legal to buy and use a domain name if it is free ! I dont think that you can get sued for this..

Hahaha, Make it faca a book.
They can't do anything. Trust me, you go and buy whatever is available, but don't use copyright images. Thats all.

If you can cover your tracks well. A hideMyAss VPN and a VPS with false registrant info should do the trick. Then I would say go for it, otherwise, expect a cease and desist letter.

Don't use any namebrand in your domain name, is my recommendation. They will make you take it down.

Unless you have an Intellectual Property Attorney on your payroll advising you on how to walk the copyright / trademark tightrope then don't do it.

Amateur webmasters typically always break some sort of trademark / copyright law and the penalties are harsh if you fight it. This is a big money game and I'm sure allfacebook.com has very good representation either fighting or keeping them out of court. IP Attorneys start at about $350 an hour to represent a client. Some are much higher than that.

No matter how big a powerful a company is I can't see how they can stop you from using 2 letters in a domain

I will disagree with you. There is nothing illegal about using any name available for domain registration. There are lot of people selling brand name domains the to brand its self.

it will sue you if you are representing as part of them or anything in that sort, but registering a domain name is not illegal. Let say i will register a doman name facebookzombi . com and you can change you photo to be zombi like so you can use it on facebook, I'm not doing anything illegal.

I have received many cease and desist orders over the years, including Facebook last year, enough to make me never use a brand in a domain name.
Why take a chance, unless you have money to burn for an attorney and a lawsuit.

Just don't try to pretend you are facebook or pretend to be affiliated with facebook. Also I would not use it to start a social networking site

It depends on what you're doing with it, I don't think you can use their name

    You can do 1 of 2 things . . . .
Use "Facebook" in your domain & see what happens, or play it smart & seek the proper legal advice before you proceed.

If you sell stuff related to facebook, or use it to start a social network site, then you will get a notice to take down the website, if you don't do that then you are gonna get sued for sure... Don't take advice from people here, most of them don't know shit(Related to trademark)... talk to a lawyer.
