Can someone give the tried and test lay out for Google places that works what works and what will not that bast why to do it ect..

Google Places is gone now, you need to research Google Local.

I've been reading up a lot on google local optimization.. And that article posted was very helpful, the part "comments from the experts" a lot of them say quality over quantity.. Make sure you have quality citations.. Your local page could be bare as well as your website but if you have quality citations you'll still rank OK.
