Can someone explain to me the purpose of backlinks?

2 Months ago, I created a website. In the last month, I have created over 100 backlinks to all PR3 and above sites including domains with .com, .org, .gov, and .edu. But I'm still not ranked by google, I have maybe 3 visitors a day, im ranked just above 3 million by Alexa..and 0 money coming in. So is backlinking something I should continue to do? If so, what is the ultimate purpose of backlinks?

Thanks for response. How many backlinks should I be creating per month, and how many backlinks until I start getting traffic?

That depends on your competition and the quality of your backlinks for the most part. Higher competition equates to needing more backlinks.

If you want some fast traffic, write some articles and publish them on ezine with links to your site in the author's resource box. You'll get targeted traffic plus some backlinks. Also, send some backlinks to your articles to promote them so the link from your article to yoiur site develops some good link juice.

just he sayd, but u have to view the cuality backlinks,not all comments or profile links help, the forums and blog are every time more powerful. Before do a backlink profile, see if the link profile of any user hare currently (like: anysite.com/forum/myprofile for example) because this link have to be indexed by google.
 
BL that directed towards to ur website i.e IBL's. BL is important for SEO because it will more credit to wesite that have good number of quality .
 
For somepart.. don't just post backlinks everywhere...try to create backlinks to specific niche you have rather than creating to not specific to your niche...

The basic purpose of backlinks is to get maximum traffic towards the linked website. On the other hand Google also index these links to rank up your website.
