Can someone please tell us know from experience, can a shared hosting site (ex: hostgator) handle visitors of 100 visitors a minute for a minisite of just 10 pages with only text and just a php button for addthis.com (overall website size is 200 kb and each page size approx. is 20 kb)? Even during sudden traffic of about 300 visitors a minute from digg or other places?

500(Visitors) x 20 kb = 9.7 MB which equals to .16 Mbps of data transfer per second

It won't raise flag even if your site receives 5k visitors per minute.

To test actual data transfer Visit the following link and test your site. Scroll down and see Total Objects size under Website Information Column.

    Code:
    http://tools.pingdom.com

Does having a custom search function counts as a database. (ex: someone search for answers in my website my searching on my custom google search on my website, and recieve pages relative to its search)

You should be fine but if your budget allows it I'd suggest upgrading. Better to be safe and not lose traffic and thus money. It's always better to cover your ass.

Okay thanks for the info which really helps! Just one last ?, even if you have intensedebate installed (IntenseDebate comments enhance and encourage conversation on your blog or website), it will still work out fine, right? And if anyone can tell me from experience, that will greatly help!

Ya , the HostGator can handle. I did a test recently like hosted wordpress with same theme and same content in more than 10 host - HostGator, JustHost,BlueHost,Ipage,Fatcow,Hostnine, Host1Plus,ixwebhosting and some vps and some dedicated.

I checked all the sites loading time by using - tools.pingdom
I will soon prepare a detailed report and will post in my site soon. After that I will post the link here.
    For small idea -
HostGator is Good. The fun is JustHost is little faster than Gator. But HostGator allows 40% consumbtion and Just Host I heard 10%.BlueHost Ok. Ipage and fatcow also ok. Ix sucks. Dedicated server rocks. and cloud powered shared host from host1plus also good. Have a look at Glow Host. They have some facts about shared hosting resource using compared with some big host.
If you need any suggestion you can contact me.
Simply, You go with hostGator. One thing if you have that much of visitors then why not you can go for VPS($30/month) or dedicated($150/month) which can be quite enough for you.
