Can new content + internal linking be enough?

Has anybody found success with simply building quality content around an existing page, to increase it's rank, without building external backlinks?

So say I had an article on the health benefits of bananas ranking in 38th position on Google.

I'd then create a few more articles:

    1) X Foods that can make you feel happier
    2) X Fruits that can give you energy
    3) The importance of potassium

These 3 articles then link to the health benefits of bananas, as they relate to it and it's good for the visitors.

Can continually doing this (doing 4,5,6,7 etc articles and linking back) be enough?
Should internal linking be exhausted before then moving onto backlinks?

It is entirely dependant on the niche you are in.

More competitive = harder to rank without links.

PM me about your twitter followers, am interested!

Guess it depends on keyword difficulty. If your keyword is super easy (top ten has optimised on-page SEO at best) i would say yes. In case you are not so lucky though better to get some links to your site.

@ScreamingMidget You can rank for a keyword with just on page, but it depends on the difficulty of the keyword. Quality is not important for google as google cannot truly assess the quality of your content as long there's something unique and readable. Quality is for readers.

However, for health I'm afraid you'll probably need some external strength from your links, esp. if you're in a common niche.

But yeah, improving your on page as much as you can is the safest and best path in this case, but make sure that you don't overoptimize yourself.
