A few weeks ago, on an old site of mine, I had a big drop in my serps for almost ALL my keywords on the same day. It went from Page 1 or 2 down to about page 4 or 5.

I started looking at pages that were linking to site, and on Google one site was showing that it may be hacked.
When you visit the site (wordpress btw) everything is fine, but on the google results it shows a meta tag and meta description completely different from what you see when you load the site.

I used Google's safe browsing diagnostic tool, and incidentally the site was last crawled on the same day my keywords dropped drastically.

I want to connect the dots here and say that is this site is reason why my rankings dropped, but I wanted some input from others.
Maybe you've had the same experience?

Well, we all know lots of SAPE links are from hacked sites. Last year, I built 100s of SAPE links to one of my websites and it shot to number 1 within a few weeks. The worst that happened was the manual penalty the site received.

So I built at least a fair few backlinks from hacked sites to my site and it didn't cause any sudden drop so yours might just be a coincidence.

You may want to add your site to Google Webmaster Tools and see if there are any manual penalties.

I do not think it is beneficial to have a site that may be considered hacked in the eyes of google as a back link.

There are only small % of sites in SAPE which are hacked.

OP, if you are getting few links from such sites, then you should be ok but if all your links are coming from single platform then there is always a chance of penalty/drop in rankings.

Once a site is hacked you never know what is going to happen to it. So I would avoid it like the plague.

Don't do it, it will backfire on your website.
