somehow on my laptop? I get free internet access with my contract phone and I was wondering if there was a way to connect my laptop on the move and use that connection. The network is 3g. Any thoughts?

This you mean?

I have a g1 and use it as a usb modem. Uses the proxoid app. Think a lot of phones can do this - search your phone model and tethering in google to find out.

Do you put your sim in it and it uses that for internet? Sorry I am a bit thick about things like this. Basically my phone has free use of the internet through its service provider and I want to use that free service on my laptop when I am out and about rather than buying a dongle for mobile internet. I hope I have explained this more clearly. Thanks for taking the time to answer:)

For my phone, nothing actually changes on the phone. I.e. the sim stays in the phone. I connect the usb to the phone, as if I were charging it, then set off the proxoid app on the phone itself. I then run an app on the laptop to start a tunnel (came with the instructions for proxoid) and make sure my internet settings are correct (localhost 8080). Then the phone acts as a usb modem. It does the same job as a mobile net dongle. Hope that helps. If you can't get it working, post the model of your phone and I'll see if I can find anything to help you.

I'd make a simple call to your provider. I looked at doing this too because I have "unlimited" data but once I called them, they said I'd have to upgrade to a tethered plan to do so. I'd call and just ask them before you take a chance and get a $3,000 phone bill next month.

Its called tethering...................... google it. See if your phone is capable and how to do it.

Some networks also get bitchy if you start eating GB's of data on your phone.

Edit: How come every post i make, my my post count stays at one. I swear i have made about 8/9 posts and i swear i was not dreaming on blackhatworld.

2nd Edit: If you are in the uk and the phone happens to be an iphone, its real easy to setup and o2(assuming your on o2) do not get bitchy about it. They are not too fussed about iphone contracts because they eat a shedload of bandwith anyway. I know this to be a fact (i do it)
