Hi, I am starting my own site, however my concern is sourcing photos for the site. Can I get sued if I use other people's images on my website? What about if I edit them so they look slightly different?

For example, if you look at The Daily Currant website (I can't post links)
there are several photos that they obviously did not take themselves, such as photos of Obama and other prominent people. How can I use these types of photos without getting into legal trouble?

    Thanks!

yu can quote source, and the emphasis is on someone to ask you to remove it.

Can you? Yes. Will you? Highly unlikely, but why take the risk when there's so many free-to-use photos available?

Most (if not all) major publishers use imagebanks or other CC-attributes photos, as should you.

If you Photoshop an image, it's still not your image and you can be sued. That's like saying you're a totally different human being after putting on make-up.

The site will be political/current events based. Do you know of an image bank with up-to-date photos in these areas?

Can I use your wife if I slap some paint on her?

... Under your logic once the paint hits her bare ass it's all good.

Why do you want to do that. Just work even more harder you will find image related to your site.

And RushingStar has made good point "If you Photoshop an image, it's still not your image and you can be sued. That's like saying you're a totally different human being after putting on make-up"

    So do something different.

    Ignore this commment.

Believe it or not photographers want money for their images not credit. An image credited doesn't pay the mortgage.

Google advanced image search can give you free to use pics with modification rights even commercially. This is what i use.

You can also search Flickr for pictures with usage rights under the Creative Commons rules.

Great tips manishseth and johnbjr! I did not know this existed.

There's not a lot, but I found a handful of solid images on Google images for given subjects. Almost all of the Google images labeled for commercial reuse came from Wikipedia or Flickr.

Something I do not understand about Creative Commons is the difference between commercial and non-commercial use. I've tried to find the answer online and can't find clear descriptions. My site is more of a labor of love, not a business endeavor. It will have ads but will never receive enough traffic to even cover hosting costs. Am I allowed to use non-commercial images since I am not selling a product or service? The image merely exists to accompany the text.

Also, can someone please explain to me why anyone would license their photo labeled for free reuse when they could be making money off of it instead?

If what igniteimages said above is true, why would any photographer voluntarily forgo wages for their work?

Better to purchase then images, instead of coping of others image and editing it
