Can I use a VPS for a SMTP instead of using hosting sites like hostgator

Yes I know the title sounds confusing but I'm a little bit new to email marketing. I want to start testing SMTP's, but i wanna be able to send mass amounts of emails with no problem. I heard host gator is able to do this, but they will ban you quickly. I also heard that VPS's can also be used for SMTP's. If this is true, can someone give me a brief elaboration on how SMTP's work with VPS. I really don't wanna use hosting. thanks
 
I don't think any VPS seller would allow you to mass spam directly from their server. Mostly people set up this on vps with ip rotation techniques. So, after getting their ip's blacklisted they'll change them.
Try the service mentioned in my signature, they've nice packages as per your requirements.
