So, in this internet age of music, Hip Hop/R&B/Underground artists put out a lot of free music. Originally I started a YouTube channel for lyric videos just to promote artists, and I only make them for free songs. All the songs I make lyric videos for are songs the artist themselves release on free mixtapes, without involvement of record labels.

Most of my videos have anywhere from 20k-100k views currently, and some of them even get 1k views per day. I hadn't even thought of monetization til a message from YouTube popped up saying "Monetize your videos and grow your audience. Become a YouTube Partner today!" when I uploaded a new video this morning.

So, can I? Any possible repercussions?

It depends on how the music has been released and under which licence.

Do research on copyright and fair use.

It might be best to contact Independent Artists and request their permission. Many might be happy for the exposure.

    Good Luck

How do I do that? Is Adsense a service YouTube gives, or do I have to use a third party website or?

Electronica and Hip Hop are genres that use samples in most of their songs. So, 90%-100% of the songs I do lyric videos to never get copyrighted or go through their label (even if it's a major artist like deadmau5 or Drake) because the artist doesn't want to go through the hassle of getting the samples cleared. That's why they're freebie/throwaway songs just for the fans.

And all the songs are released very lowkey. For example, the artist will get on twitter and tweet the link to the song via SoundCloud and that's it. No paperwork, no promotion, no labels, no copyright, no radio support, etc. Also, the lyric videos I do are well made, I use clean font, I animate the words, I edit photoshop backgrounds, color correct, I use visual effects some times, etc. They're really well made and take a good 5-6 hours to make. So, technically, that part of it is my work?

It's no worse then guys that make bank off of reblogging other peoples Art on tumblr.
