    I have built an authority (soon to be) site in the Pet niche, and I have been doing keyword research for the past few days;

    I have found a lot of obscure search terms, which still get 1000, 2000 and sometimes 4000+ searches per month, but they are just that, pretty obscure, and long tail.

    Can a site just target hundreds of long tail keywords, or would it be better to target big, competitive keywords?

    Personally i always start on the long tail so I'm at least earning a few bucks the go big. Targeting hundreds seems like hell though ;)

    I had!

    But in terms of Google, will they mind if I write articles targeting long tails, rather than writing one article and bunching in as many of them as I can?

    I always wondered this as well..so even if they are broad and obscure but somewhat related to each other the seo articles should pull the site together for higher rankings on those long tail keywords?

    I do both!

    I use pages for the big keywords and posts for the LSI. (I'm not sure why I do it but it works for my niche)

    Have the LSI support the more competitive words. LSI will bring in your audience, your onsite marketing will bring them to the big stuff.

    Yea, that's kinda what I mean, but mine are really related to the niche .. For example;

    Instead of writing 1 article about medical problems in dogs, I write a seperate article for each medical problem? So instead of writing a general article, and bullet pointing them, I write an entire article on each, and end up with say 20+ fresh articles

    Well I try to write an article targeting one keyword but in that article I do put close variations. I do a fair bit of relevant internal linking to, with that amount of content should be pretty easy to do. This works well for me.

    I'd go for separate articles- easier to rank for (but check).

    Plus from a user experience if I searched for something I'd want to read an article about that specific subject so your customers will stay on site longer. Link well to closely related articles and they may hang around for a while.

    I have about 70,000 long tail keyword phrases that no one really cares about that I target in my niche...there is nothing wrong with long tail...

    The site gets good traffic, but remember, these terms are super long tail...
