First of all, I am a novice in online marketing/adwords so apologies if it's a dumb question, but I am wondering if there is a way that I can find out what sites are displaying a competitor's advertising. This competitor has seen a massive spike in traffic recently, and i noticed their adwords campaign on one particular site, so i am just wondering if i can find out what other sites might be displaying their ads.

keywordspy_com did not return any results for the competitor's URL, and compete_com did not have any data pertaining to it.
    Thanks for the links though.
Would anyone happen know of anything better?

well, what you are asking is what every agency wants to know; what their competitors are doing. If it is display, you can try http://www.moat.com/ but you wont get much headway.

btw, if you clicked on their adword, you might be retargeted, so unless you have stats to back up they are spending more, they just might be retargeting users that have been on their site.

Spyfu.com is definitely a great tool for information on your competition's campaigns.

If you've ever run an adsense campaign, you'll know that the ads can pop up in millions of different places including gmail accounts, youtube, and any website with adsense, including google searches. Do you have any idea how many places these ads could show up? And you certainly wouldn't know any real information if someone was tracking it, like how many were clicked, how much they are paying, what their monthly/daily limit is, what the CPC is.. when they have the ads running, etc...

No offense, but it's kind of a silly thing to ask. The websites out there that say they track them can't track where the ads are showing up. That depends what the user is looking at, at that time. These ads change! Google has the most advanced algorithms in the world to make them show up in the best places for people to click, and now that's based on their search history, not even always what's on the site. It's absurd to think someone can track that, other than google!

Why is anyone worried about where the ads are showing up? It depends on the keywords, sure. But try it for yourself. Go browse at kayaks all day, and then go visit a real estate site (without clearing cookies or history) Ads for kayaks will show up, not real estate ads! And someone else looking at the same site could see real estate ads, or maybe ads for baby clothes...

    understand?

He's talking about adwords, not adsense.

there are ways of doing a competitor check, but i dont think there is a free solution. especially if you want to see WHERE they placed ads. adwords is at the bottom of the rabbit hole. if this brand is big enough, they would be using rtb on different dsps.

Adwords campaigns are placed on Adsense, but it tracks through the "display network". You'll find most enterprise/agency accounts have these split out, due to the significant performance difference.

A competitor of ours used our trademarked name as an adword in late March of this year. I should have taken a screenshot, but thought I could do it later (but it was gone). Is it possible to determine what google adwords they used in late March of this year?

Unfortunately no, if you'd like to file a trademark with Google you can do so at the link below. (I can't post links yet so just copy/past it)

How can you know where the ads are? It could be in someones gmail account, for example.

All that information is in the Adwords interface. You can get a full list of all the websites your display network ads appeared on, and the associated metrics with that site/page.

I think the OP is talking about Adsense ads correct?

If so you can use mixrank.com whatrunswhere.com and adbeat.com to see which sites some of their ads are on.

Those sites above only track certain domains and then only certain pages on those domains. They are still good to see some sites a competitor's ads appear on consistently over time.

Furious George is correct (great screen name BTW), the ads are shown on pages based on Google's algo and the setup of your competitor's adwords campaigns.

But here's the catch, the vast majority of sites displaying adsense aren't opted in to the site targeting option that let's advertisers specifically choose a site to advertise on. So even if you have a list of sites your competitor's adsense ads show up on chances are you can't specifically target them but rather have to hope you setup your campaigns like your competitors and that Google thinks your site should show up on the same pages as your competition.

Of course none of the above services mention this :) I've used two of them and gotten a list of sites and then try to setup my adwords campaign to target them specifically yet none of them can be site targeted...

Of course... but we're talking about competitors here, where no one other than the account holder and google is privvy to that info.

Depending on how much you spend, you actually can get industry information like that from Google, as long as you have a dedicated account rep. It's not available publicly.

If google gave any of my account info to anyone, I would sue the heck out of them. They might give industry standard info to someone, but no way is it specific.
