I've got a topic that I want to do an authority website on. It gets about 4000 global and a few hundred local searches. It is a topic that i can easily write about having many years experience working in the field.

The trouble is, when I look at the competition, many of the top 10 are actually government websites or universities who are writing 'theoretical' stuff about the topic.

On the one hand, this is good for me, because that's less corporate competition. But how the hell do i compete with .edu and .gov sites for page rank? Can it be done, or should I just give it up on the whole idea?

    thanks for any advice,
    Todd

:) Thanks guys - these are good points. I don't want to appear unmotivated! :)
But google does give so much credibility to government websites. I'm sure there must be alot of keywords that face this problem?

For example, if I want to do a site up on dealing with depression (not the topic i'm choosing), i wonder how you compete with academic sites dealing with the same topic, or health organisations, or not for profits etc.

Look into the strength of the pages that show up. Maybe the root domain is very strong, but these are weaker inner pages that show up as your competition. Most likely it is not the home pages of the gov and university websites. It can still be challenging to outrank them though, but it is possible. You won't know until you try:D

Maybe try to buy an expiring domain with some powerful links pointing to it (if you can find something relevant to your niche), and built your site on that.
