If I put the same picture on every page, but give it different attributes like different alt tags, title, and description, is this a risky thing to do? Is it considered duplicate content in Google's eyes? Can they even tell?

    You'll be fine.

The point of alt tags is so google can see what keyword the image is related to. Also think about branded sites with their logo on every page... They aren't going to be penalised for it.

Since you'll be using different alt tags, title, and description don't worry, you'll be fine.

But in this case OP seems to be treating the same picture as unique, on every page. But in fact it's the same. No idea how that will infect your ranking tho.
But yes, google knows if it's the same picture or not. How else to you think google image search works?

You'll be fine. Different filenames, tags, descriptions etc. and generally you have nothing to worry about.
Only issues with images I hear about are those that relate to using copyrighted content and getting busted. Good luck OP.

I doubt if it will be passing through google's eyes as unnoticed, have you seen google's similar image search?

irrespective of the tags and names google pulls out the similar images almost correctly!

How about posting same classified ads wordings, (same title and images) with link to your site? Any negative effects in terms of SEO?

Recently Google announced that they are going to penalize similar images (perhaps the word "penalizing" is too strong in this case, let's say "filtering out" instead) like the search engine is filtering out similar text content. As they said, the search engine is going to analyze all duplicate images now both in- and cross-domain.

Yes, at the moment Image Search algo is mainly keyword-tied: it mostly relies on alt tags, titles, and descriptions of pictures. However, the algo is constantly evolving: some tricks that used to work (e.g. resizing image, inverting image or changing shading) are easily detected by Google now. Even if you change alt tags and titles as well as the size or position of your images, there's a chance that Google will treat those images as duplicates. If it does, only the first indexed image will appear in Image Search results.

As for your case, I don't think that you will get some sort of penalty for using one and the same picture on every page of your site. If it's your own image and you use it as a structural element of your website design, you will be totally fine.

After all, it's not the case of image theft or unauthorized usage of somebody's image content.

Does anybody know if it is OK to use images from Google Images on your website?

I have done this with many websites, and I haven't noticed any change in ranking. Is this considered duplicate content?

Yes, Images are checked with there values.... and they will come to know that it is duplicate if the same images are copied.
They can even check videos which are copied frame by frame.... Google is smart.... :)

I'm sure they can detect it but I highly doubt you'll get in trouble for it.

Consider this, many sites have logos, names, stuff in the header that appears on every page of the website.
So if duplicate images triggered penalties, what would you do? Use a different logo on every page?

    That wouldn't make sense.

Google is aware of when an image is a brand image and would not penalize that on its own. As far as images being uniquely detectable, yes they are. Many years ago, and maybe today, there was/is a program that conceals messages as digital noise in pictures. Concealing a message in an image means that there is a way to extract that message - meaning you have to be able to determine the message content from the digital noise and the actual image pixels. The motion picture industry also uses this methodology to determine if a movie is pirated.

Google could care less about duplicate images. Duplicate articles is a whole different story.
