I'm doing a niche right now along the lines with a content locker. But I'm not sure if I'd be able to rank my page because it's a free domain. So would you be able to rank if you use a domain such as (dot)webs(dot)com, or something of that sort? Thank you

I've seen many Blogspot and Wordpress sites at the #1 spot (not for highly competitive keywords, though) It's probably because these sites have probably the highest PR out of all the "free website" clients.

Yes! As a matter of fact webs.com has been dominating some competitive keyword for sometime now, and there is actually a thread here in BHW as to when will google will notice this.

Anyways, "domain name/keywords on domain/EMD/free domain/subdomain" is just a small part of how google calculate rankings.

Try to make it up with other factors and I see no reason why your site wouldn't rank.

You have to work really hard to bring free domains to rank high on google but when you use paid domain name it would be easier to rank them up on google. Cheers.

Not really, who says? Are you making statements from personal experience or just assuming so?

They noticed already. I saw one guy ranking 40 and more webs.com sites that suddently dropped to oblivion on the last penguin update.
