Hi Guys,

Any baseball buffs here?

What are the chances of an english student making it to the MLB? And what age do players usually start their career in the MLB?

Im 18 now .. 6ft 3' .. 205lbs .. iv always had a powerful arm, and iv been called an athletic prodigy by many sport coaches (no lie) i can throw a javelin 60m, can throw a fastball around 80mph (obvz not straight :p) and i have a super hard punch!

All that ^^ is not to brag, but its just to prove that i am a powerfull 18yr old, and i know that my power and athletic ability will not get me to the MLB .. but what dya know, im also awesome at baseball! lol

What do you think are the chances of making it to the MLB at this age and from the UK?? Is a college scholarship the only way in?

It doesn't matter where you're from or how old you are (as long as over 18) if you are a REALLY good baseball player, then you have a chance.

Most teams have open tryouts at some point and you can show up and try out. But baseball isn't all about power, it's about being well rounded and if you're talking pitching, placement, variety and consistency are more important than sheer power.

Good luck and if it's something you want to do, go for it!

Cheers bro .. kind words!!

80 MPH for a fastball won't cut it as a pitcher unless you are a lefty and can throw some junk pitches pretty well.

Do some videos and send them to a bunch of colleges over here... by a bunch I mean hundreds and you may get some opportunities.

Junior colleges may have an opportunity for you and any decent player will generally get some scouts looking at you.

For my next life, that is what I would like to be. :)
You can use YouTube for this if you are serious about it.
Good luck and come back to BHW if you ever play for The Yankees.

Well if the 80mph doesn't cut it when everyone in the MLB throws low to upper 90's then we know your javelin throwing abilities or your super hard punch will get you in...

Basically your chances rounds out to about 0%

Give it a shot but there are thousands of kids toiling in the minors looking for their big break in MLB. These kids have lived and breathed baseball their entire life so you are up against some pretty stiff competition. But like they say the saddest words in world are I could've...

Learning the knuckleball is a good idea, then you can pitch until you're 50.

I have know idea what your skills are but as far as the original question: Can an English teenager play in the major leagues? Absolutely. If you have the talent, no one will care where you come from.
Your best bet is to try to play for one of the good summer leagues here in the US during your school break. If you can get on a solid team with other solid potential recruits both college and pro scouts will come watch.

Thanks a lot for the answers guys!

I know its got nothing to do with the nationality of the player BUT, over here in england, baseball is not played .. i play for sheffield bladerunners and they are a top team here, and they get about 6 people watching there games .. and they usually tend to be old people walking there dogs lol

Just to clear something: I DONT WANT TO BE A PITCHER! ... I just said that stuff to show that i have good upper body strength for my age, and im a naturally athletic kid.

I just think my age is a bit of a restriction, iv only been playing 2 years but they say im a natural at the clubs iv played .. when i tried out for sheffield, they were going step by step on how to hit the ball, tell me to relax and take it easy .. so i did .. and hit a homer on the 3trd pitch lol .. Even the best players here it about 5 HR per season

Once again, thanks for the advice

Yea, IM will earn you more money than recreational baseball .. but make it to the biggies and your sorted!! I heard that the minimum contract for a MLB player is $1,000,000 per year!

A-Rod signed a 250million deal!! Thats mad

Just saw this...80 mph is not fast whatsoever. I know a bunch of my classmates on my team as well as myself can hit up to 90 on the radar gun, but don't have a shot for the pros because you need more than just a fastball, you need breaking stuff. This is in high-school.
