Today in the morning my domain was ranking 94 for my main keyword and it has been in this position for several weeks now. The domain expired today so I renewed it for two years. Now it is 46. do you think such change in rankings is coused by me renewing it or it is just coincidence?

I can only talk about one case, I have a 1 keyword website ranking at #1 in google, it reached #1 after right after I renewed the domain for 10 years.
Might be just coincidence because there was a lot of money spent in SEO as well.

The theory is that Google is a "registrar" itself, and it dose automated checks in order to find info, such as expiration date.
Although,I really think this is a myth,it's not the first time I'm hearing people ranking higher after renewing their domain for a longer period of time.

Yes domain must expire at least 2 years ahead. It makes Google think you more serious. I use woorank dot com to check my sites often. Buy ten years,it will boost your SEO.....
