So I was reading googles terms and conditions and came across this little section:

"Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold? that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google."

Do you think by constantly checking your rankings you could actually be hurting your site? Like me for example, I have a site that I checked everyday, I have 10 KWs loaded up in traffic travis and I set it to search the top 1000 results for each KW. This site is doing poorly with all KWs at #500 or greater so that ended up being a lot of queries for that site at once. What are your guys thoughs on this?

Negative. In my opinion your worrying too much.

    Want the real truth?

Run your own tests on an obscure low vol keyword and check it every minute while logged into google

No issues checking your own ranking once in a while but checking it thousand times in an hour would surely ring alarm bells.

How do they know you are checking your rankings? I think most of the rank checking programs parse the page for your URL. Can they detect that?

How exactly would they know you are checking "your" sites rankings? All you do is query any number of random keywords and scrape the site for a particular URL. Google just sees it as a query for the keyword and nothing else.

If your talking about checking your SERP ranking then it isn't going to hurt you at all. When you check your SERP position all that you're doing on google is performing a search for a phrase. If you're using a SERP checking tool then it is taking the results, parsing it through it's own algorithm to see what position your website is in. Since your website is not being passed to google it has no idea which of the thousands of results being returned is the one you're checking.

If your doing the check manually then the same thing applies except you're paging through the SERP looking for your website. Same thing though google doesn't know what website you're checking. Even if you do click on your page when you find it, you could just as easily be some random surfer obsessed with that site. What can happen though is that if you do click on any results, google will start customizing the results to what it thinks you're looking for. If that happens it starts skewing the results that you see, so that's why it's really better to use serp checking tools because they'll check from other ip addresses and you'll see the true position of your website in the SERP for random surfers searching for the keyword.

If you're talking about checking your websites PR, then you are passing the website to google in order to find out the PR. But even then it's unlikely you'll get a penalty because you could just as easily be some visitor obsessed with the PR of that site. There would really be no good reason for google to penalize for that.

As far as the automated message you mentioned, well google does care about that. The reason is that too many automated queries can have a negative performance effect on their servers. That isn't going to cause a penalty regarding your website, but rather a penalty you'll get for the IP your using to run the tools. (A lot of firefox competition analyzers will cause that if your not careful when using them). Generally the only penalty you'll get for that is getting a temporary block on your IP for accessing google. Wait a few minutes and you'll be able to search again.

I don't think the TOS says anything about penalizing any website. I doubt if Google has the capability of detemining a website's owner's IP address... If they do, then that's a very serious privacy issue.

I guess I was freaking about before actually thinking. Even if you make all those queries Google doesn't know which website you were matching them up against. I guess Im just looking for any answers as to why my website took a poo.

I did a full check of all my sites and keywords a few days ago (30+sites) When I was finished and went to use Google I got a message and a captcha form for "strange activities" so they do know something is up...rankings have not dramatically changed.

it happens because of too many search queries from the same IP. Nothing to do with rankings whatsoever.
I believe Google doesn't even know what sites do I own (except those shitty blogger blogs).

    No, I don't so.
If that is the case, people would just try to hurt competitor's site by checking their rankings excessively.

They know for a fact that people wont stop checking their serps even with a gun pointed at the head. And they know for a fact that no matter how many requests they get, their servers can handle it and more...

I would say this... Yes, imo.

im so paranoid about this that i only check once per week, and when i do i never click my domain once i see it, i scroll 2 pages past it and click some random adsense ad.
