Can an optimized 4-keyword-long-tail domain beat big unoptimized competitors?

I am thinking of buying a .net website with a 4-keywords-long-tail phrase, related to hotels, with 135K monthly searches (broad), and only 13,000 exact competing websites in " " on Google.

My programs (niche finder, samuray) tell me it's relatively easy to rank, however I see Hotel dot com, Expedia, Marriot, Hyatt, tripadvisor on the front page... Obviously they don't go after my 4-keyword-long-tail search phrase, and nobody has all 4 keywords in the title.

Will I get anywhere with my new website? Or are these big names, even when not optimized for this longtail phrase, so mighty that I should just forget about it?

Excellent question. This is something I would want to know too.

It doesn't just apply to Expedia and stuff. But let's say if we have a long tail keyword and we're competing with sites that are established that sell certain products. Like, coffee machines. How likely it is to out rank them?

There is no way you are going to easily beat these guys -- Expedia, Marriot, Hyatt, tripadvisor -- with just a keyword optimized domain.

Keyword optimized domains do all the heavy-lifting only when there is very low competition.

With that said, there is sometimes an element of luck due to the complicated nature of search engines.

But if we combine proper backlinking strats with a keyword optimized domain, would it be likely to beat them?
