I launched 4 sites about 2 weeks ago with the keyword in the domain for low competition words, two were plain HTML and the other 2 were based off WordPress. The 2 WP sites were created using the FlexSqueeze theme.

All 4 sites share the same link building strategy: Scrapebox Rapid Indexer --> SENuke Web 2.0 Blast + Bookmarks --> Scrapebox Blast all the Web 2.0s. Basic strategy I have used for the last year+. After 2 weeks, my HTML sites are both in the top 10 but my other two WP sites are still no where to be found in the top 100. Google has indexed them, Yahoo shows about 1000 backlinks, but they are not showing up in the SERP.

Can a wordpress theme (FlexSqueeze in this case) cause an immediate penalty with Google, regardless of content? It sounds far-fetched to me, but this theme is usually associated with selling products and developing squeeze pages... things Google generally does not like.

im not sure but ill tell you my experience. i had a 2010 theme and an elegant theme called the source, each with the same niche. that was six months ago and i never put any content, just title and tags and stuff for both.

somehow the source is on page 10 of google with 7 million competition and the 2010 isnt indexed, i have no idea how the source got indexed or how its ranking with no content; i never touched either site, and everyday scrapeboxers spam my source, while my 2010 doesnt exist even to spammers.

i really think there is something to themes, but i dont know what.

Some themes could be a black mark:

    * too many extraneous pages, too much internal duped content, link juice spread too thin
    * html errors / not validating
    * site wide links in the footer to the designer's site or spam sites
    * just plain bad markup for seo
    * check the meta robots tags etc

A badly designed template will make you bomb, regardless of whether it's WP or just a straight html...

thetvnun-- yeah, it is hard to put a finger on it. Something definitely does not add up.

Autumn-- The onsite SEO is pretty solid. Same SEO I do with all my WP sites, only difference in this case is the theme!
