I have seen and heard of negative SEO - but does it exist for email marketing too?

I was wondering if a competitor could subscribe to my newsletter with multiple accounts and mark my emails as spam to gradually ruin my reputation?

Is there a way to guard against tarnishing of one's email reputation?

    Appreciate any response!

Well it wouldn't be called negative SEO but it seems like something a douchebag with no life might want to do.

If it happens, start a new campaign with a new email address and everything and just import the old list of subscribers I suppose.

    Technically he can.
He could just use bogus emails if you aren't running a double opt in campaign which would kill your email servers IP swiftly because of bounces.
Now, i don't think it is commonly used though.

Yeah, I've seen it happen before. This is a reason why I always advise my clients to collect IP addresses of opt-ins as well. If any spam complaints then you can point at the IP address if your ESP complains about spam reports.

What good does pointing at them do? What patterns are you trying to expose?

pointing - Sorry figure of speech.

Meant if your ESP receives spam complaints from someone who has multiple email addresses in your list and has put multiple complaints against you. The majority of the time this person would have signed up from the same IP address. So....if your ESP wants to ban you for multiple spam complaints from the same person, if you had recorded their IP on signup, it would be pretty suspicious to have multiple spam complaints all from the same IP.

I once had a client with 15 spam complaints from his 100% double opt-in confirmed email list. Turned out is was a competitor in his niche. ESP looked at the double opt-in data, all 15 signups from same IP address. They checked the 15 complaints that had come in, all from the same IP as well. Spam reports were ignored.

Probably. It was the fact that he had collected the IP address in his signup data that saved him lots of hassle.

Really appreciate the insights. How easy is that option to set up - collecting IP addresses during optin? Just a checkmark?

Depends on what email software you are using to build your list. Some have the option, some don't.
