I remember when people used to throw the "Negative SEO" buzz phrase around like there was not tomorrow; right after the Google Penguin algorithm update went into effect. But are we seeing this now on Instagram as well? If you look at the attached chart of the daily follower growth of one of our pages you'll see what I mean. Starting September 2nd (around 4 days ago), we started getting injections of around 1k "ghost" / fake followers. From yesterday until today (9/6/2018) we got another injection; so 3 total so far. Throughout this fake follower increase, our engagement rate has been dropping from about 3% to about 1.4%. We did not purchase these fake followers, so somebody else must have done it (maybe a jealous competitor, who the f*** knows). Have you guys experienced something like this? This is really easy to do to a page nowadays and pretty cheap too. Having to go back and clean up the fake or bot followers is doable, but a pain in the arse. Mathematically, they do bring your engagement rate now, since your follower base is higher. What are your thoughts on this and what the best approach is to deal with it? Thanks and I hope that this doesn't happen to any of you!
