domain squatting.. you can register any domain, but if someone owns a trademark on a term or word within your domain name...they can obtain your domain and any punative damages.

this also applies to people's names. Some celebs have their name TMed so no one else can legally make money off it. If you are just making a site ABOUT a person, generally they won't go after you unless it's slander or you are selling or sharing something bootleg that pertains to them. But if you register their specific name, especially with no other words in the title, yes, you would lose the case if it ever went to ICANN (the internet court system, basically).

This doesn't mean everyone will go after you but it's best to just avoid the stress of it anyway.

If you have the same name as a famous person, or can provide a valid reason why you have a right to the domain. It might be ok.Also depends what you put on the domain. If you put any info about said famous/sports star, they then have a valid case to get the domain taken off you and possibly sue your arse. I doubt its worth the risk to reward ratio.

A while back a legal firm wrote to me about one of my domains and after looking into it found that I didn't have a chance of keeping it. I looked at similar domains on this website ...

    wipo.int/amc/en/domains/search

Regarding famous personalities look for Madonna as an example and for rinconcito's flight company+offers see easyjettours.

On the up-side I had owned the domain I had trouble with for a couple of years before I needed to get rid of it, so it could be worth the risk ?

So what's the worst case scenario? Do I just give up the domain & I'm done with it? Because, if that's the case I don't mind paying the freaking $10 a year & running the site/getting the traffic until they shut it down.
