Some (well ranking!) competitors of mine buy backlinks from a site that was penalized by panda / penguin back in 2012. This website still has good metrics (PA/DA/TF/CF ~ 35-45). But I mean, this website was penalized and has not recovered since then. I can see that because this site ranks very low for its main keywords although these keywords are low competitive. Also the pagerank dropped down from 5 to 0 in 2012 and still is 0! Obviously google does not like this site anymore!

Normally I would never consider to get a backlink from there...

However, competitors still buy backlinks from this site. Are they just dumb (I dont think so because they rank well!) or can backlinks from penalized websites still be powerful?

    Interested to hear your opinions!!

any thoughts? I would think that the links from the penalized site now carry less authority. The question is if it could be potentially dangerous.

It could be ok in short term, but definitely not a good idea in long term.

Manual Spam Actions are typically automatically lifted in 6-12 months even if no action is taken. So if it was penalized in 2012 that no longer matters. Algorithmic penalties typically are much shorter in duration if corrective SEO is applied. So the site could be "healed up" in 1-3 months.

The site may lose it's PR, but PR is an out dated metric anyways.

I don't think it's worth it mate. Why risk your site? There are far better and safer means to rank.

PR is outdated metric but if a big site drops down from 5 to 0 and stays there it surely has some meaning. The site still does not rank at all so google simply does not like it anymore.

I am just confused that successful competitors buy links from such a site. I thought there is some deeper meaning to it. But reading your comment it probably isnĀ“t. Or some really deep shit nobody else knows about :)
