There's loads of expired domains available for reg fee that have hundreds or thousands of incoming backlinks pointing to it already.

Does it help me in my future SEO effort's when I try to get my site rank high, even if my site isn't going to be related to the backlinks?

The relvance of the sites linking in does matter to an extent but in the end a link is still a link

eventually, if those are legit backlinks, some of em will be removed, but if u put up a new site right away that is still relevant, it could help ya

    Hi pdoods.

As already pointed out, yes it will help but it should remain with the original register.

Be careful, a lot of times expired domains have been banned from the G. Do your research before you buy!

I do not know the answer, but I would think you would need to set up a 301 redirect on your 404 page as your links are going to be coming into pages that do not exist.

I hope someone that knows more can comment on this.

Yes, you need to setup a 301 redirect. You can do this either from the domain registrar's control panel or if you have it pointed somewhere for hosting, using one of the ways listed on http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php

As far as the answer to your original post, it counts as a link. Depending on what the actual backlinks are, you will have degree of relevancy. Legitimate, unrelated backlinks will probably be removed if you simply do a 301 redirect for ranking, however.

I can't really say what would be best, but I would think along the lines that if you have a PR 5 domain, putting up another website and monetizing it with adsense while linking to your other site would be favorable as high-quality backlinks seem to matter more in terms of whitehat SEO than the quantity of low-quality backlinks.

Do a site:domainname.com check in google. If it appears to be indexed then it isn't banned, but if it's not in Google index there's a chance it's banned by Google.

Google can see when domains expire, and proceeds to wipe away all ranking credits.

do you research and make sure the backlinks are legit. search for domains that were entered at yahoo directory and if they are still listed there. I made a great start with some sites this way. I got one with a backlink from money.cnn.com :p

Why would you want to pay that kind of money when you can make your own domain and use the useful tools and tips here and rank bigtime.
