Hello - 1st post (I'm a noob, so pls be gentle).

I was recently looking to buy an expiring PR2 domain that's a good fit for a niche site I'm going to build. However, when I check the existing backlinks, almost all of them (they number in thousands) are what would be considered junk (comments on blogs that have nothing to do with the subject, links from pages set up for the sole purpose of backlinking, etc.). The previous owner used the url for an ecommerce site and probably used an seo firm for this.

My question is, would I be better off buying a "clean" url with PR0, or do you think the existing backlinks would serve as a foundation for the organic backlinks I plan on building? Do I need to worry about google penalizing this url because of the old backlinks?

is the domain expired or pending or you are looking to buy it from the current owner?

Better leave it. If you're buying an existing domain, then you would be much better off buying a looked-after domain, rather than one that was spammed with god knows what.

Thanks. It was a godaddy auction and I had made a bid before posting here. I ended up being the only bidder so now I have to figure out a plan for what to do with it.

I don't think it can too much of a bad thing, big G surely just ignores backlinks
that it doesn't regard as relevent.
I may be wrong but just start building varied PR backlinks from related (keywords) sites
as the previous user may have only targeted the home page, and not deeper pages / posts.

If it's really PR2 now then it has some trust from google in spite of crappy links.
    Get it.
