There's a new TV show out and It's a big hit. There's .net and .org avaliable. I was wondering, say the show was Jersey Shore (lol its not). If you name it jerseyshore.com/net/etc will I face any problems, law wise? How can I make it so that I can rank for the term easily yet have a good domain?

No, you won't get into trouble. Put a disclamer on your site.

Lol... really? Some of the advice on this site worries me.

@ OP - register the domain and hosting at an offshore registrar, will make it harder for them to take it down.

All depends on just how quickly you can rank a site. Understand that this will not be a long term project.

You need to think like a stripper -> get in while the pasture is green -> take some money off the table -> get out

I did this a little last year when I was short of cash and managed to pull in the 10K/mo I needed to keep afloat. Total time for the project was 3Mo then I signed over the domains to the studio that owns the rights to the TV show and all was good.

Technically, he will be in the clear, but the big corporations might still try to litigate and make his life a living hell.

Follow the advice they gave you - register it offshore, use a valid address from G.Maps and a valid local Skype number, so if they try to take it down for fake whois info, they won't be able to.

Market the hell out of the name. Make it popular. Then, wait for an offer. Ask as much as you want. Something in the six or even seven figure range. They will enter into negotiations and you will eventually reach a mutually acceptable price and still take lots of money for it. Use an escrow service for the transaction, NOT PAYPAL. Some specialized domain auctions offer such services.

Just one more thing - you are better off if you list it at a domain auction site and somehow let them know a domain they want is listed for sale, but kind of indirectly, so it won't appear as outright extortion. Another strategy would be to make THEM approach you first.

    Hope it helps.

Depends on the name and what you do with it and whether or not whoever owns the TM wants it
